SK Sets Record in Plainview's 66-31 Rout of DAR

Story By Heath Hambrick

It was a record-breaking night for Plainview junior point guard Sawyer Kate Hulgan and the Lady Bears on Tuesday night on Grant Mountain. The Lady Bears moved to 4-0 in 4A Area 16 play with a 66-31 victory over the DAR Lady Patriots.

Plainview led at the end of each quarter (22-4, 40-13, 58-27, 66-31).

Coming into the contest, Hulgan needed just six made three-point baskets to break the State and National record for made three-pointers in a single career. Deshler’s Chloe Siegel set the record in 2022-23 with 588 three’s made.

In the first quarter, the Lady Bears built a commanding lead thanks to Hulgan’s 10 points and Piper Anderson's six points. Huglan made two threes in the quarter and then made two more in the second quarter, leaving her with just two more to make to put her name in the record book.

After taking a 27-point lead to the locker room, the Lady Bears extended their lead by the end of the third quarter to 31 points, 58-27. Hulgan cemented her place in the record books during the third quarter, making the final two three-point baskets she needed to break the record.

With a 31-point lead and the game long been decided, Plainview head coach Luke Griggs sat his starters for the final quarter to give the bench players some playing time.

Along with the six three-point baskets she made Tuesday night, Hulgan totaled 26 points, which also pushed her over the 3,000-point mark for her career, and she is only a junior.

With the rest of her junior season remaining and her senior year next season, she will have the opportunity to break the DeKalb County scoring record for a female. The current record is held by former Fyffe great and DeKalb County Hall of Fame member Heather Mayes Powell. Powell scored 4,149 points in her high school career at Fyffe.

Other scorers for Plainview were Piper Anderson with 17 points and Taegan Whitmire, who added 12 points.

The No.1 Lady Bears improved their record to 17-2 (4-0) on the season.
