On Wednesday, June 3, a Little Free Library was officially opened by the tennis courts in Bynum Park.
The little free library is the result of the Rho Chapter for Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of key women educators, one day deciding to try and set one up in Scottsboro. After deciding, the members began gathering a variety of books to set fill that library once it was set up and tasked Scottsboro High School’s Agri-Science Department to put together the library and decorate it.
“The Little Free Library’s mission is to build community, inspire readers and expand book access for all. These are all values that align closely with Delta Kappa Gamma. This library is for everyone: take a book, share a book, they are always free,” Delta Kappa Gamma Dr. Sylvia Coleman said.
Once the library was officially open following a ribbon cutting, everyone in attendance helped to add books to the library, with multiple boxes full of them being brought to ensure that the library was fully stocked to start.
“Today, we celebrate not just a ribbon cutting but a shared commitment to literacy. Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is grateful for the opportunity to share books, ideas and small moments of discovery with our community here in Scottsboro. We encourage everyone in our community to join us as we continue to support reading, sharing and lifelong learning,” Coleman said.
