GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — The City of Guntersville officially welcomed a new District 1 Commissioner during its commission meeting Wednesday, recognizing the appointment of Charles Whisenant to fill the unexpired term of the late Commissioner Ronny Shumate.
Whisenant, the Republican nominee for the District 1 seat, was appointed by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey on June 4 to serve on the Marshall County Commission following Shumate’s passing.
In a letter announcing the appointment, Governor Ivey expressed confidence in Whisenant’s ability to serve the citizens of Alabama with integrity and dedication.
“As one of my appointees, you will be making important decisions that directly affect the citizens of Alabama,” Ivey wrote. “I have made honesty and integrity a priority in my Administration, and I know that you will embody these two virtues while serving the people of Alabama.
The governor also encouraged Whisenant to be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars and to work toward building public trust in government.
Whisenant was sworn into office during a private ceremony on June 4, administered by Marshall County District Judge Mitch Floyd. His appointment ensures continued representation for District 1 residents and fills the vacancy left by Shumate’s death.
During Wednesday’s meeting, city officials welcomed Whisenant and expressed their commitment to working with him as he begins his service on the commission.
Whisenant will serve the remainder of Shumate’s term and immediately assume the responsibilities of representing District 1 residents and addressing issues affecting the community.
The appointment marks a new chapter for District 1 as county and municipal leaders continue working together on behalf of Marshall County citizens.
