Plainview’s Sawyer Kate Hulgan is a finalist for the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 3A Player of the Year honor, in addition to making the All-State, All-County teams, and the Sand Mountain Super 7. Players of the Year will be announced at a luncheon April 16 at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association named its finalists for high school basketball players of the year, and one DeKalb County player made is among them: Plainview’s Sawyer Kate Hulgan.
Hulgan, a 9th-grader, helped propel the Lady Bears to the Class 3A State playoffs.
Plainview Girls Basketball Coach Luke Griggs said Hulgan’s numbers for the year stack up against the other nominees.
She scored 725 total points on the year -- breaking a Plainview record, and 143 of those points were scored from the three-point range. That’s fourth all-time in girls basketball, Griggs said.
Hulgan hit 82% from the free-throw line, and she averaged three rebounds and two assists all season.
“She’s a great player,” Griggs said. “She works really hard.
“She’s an even better teammate,” the coach said.
The ASWA will name Players of the Year, Mr. and Miss Basketball and the Super All-State team at a luncheon banquet Tuesday, April 16 at the Montgomery Renaissance.
