Landmarks of DeKalb County officially launched its month-long SPARK! Places of Innovation event, Saturday with a featured presentation on Sequoyah, followed by a grand opening reception.
The opening program drew attendees interested in innovation and regional history. The Sequoyah presentation highlighted his lasting contributions and connected his legacy to the broader theme of innovation being celebrated throughout the month.
The SPARK! exhibit is now open to the public during regular weekday hours. Dedicated volunteers are hosting visitors and sharing information about the exhibit and its focus on the innovative people and places that have shaped the region.
The Feb. 21 program featured guest speaker Charlie Rhodormer as part of the ongoing series of events.
Additional presentations are scheduled in the coming weeks:
• Feb. 28 — “Fort Payne’s First Boom” at 4 p.m., presented by Jessica Harper-Brown
• March 14 — FPHS Gigawatts Demonstration at noon
• March 14 — “Sock Empire” at 4 p.m., presented by Katy Bell
The programs will explore key moments in Fort Payne’s history, including the city’s early industrial growth and its role in the hosiery industry, while also showcasing student-led science and technology projects.
Three more Saturdays of special presentations are planned as part of the celebration. Organizers encourage community members to attend the free events, explore the exhibit and learn more about the innovation that continues to shape Fort Payne and the surrounding area.
