Dr. Mab Segrest will be speaking at the DeKalb County Democratic Club

Dr. Mab Segrest will be speaking at the DeKalb County Democratic Club on Saturday, August 16, 2025. Segrest’s talk is titled “Alabama Courage and How To Bottle It.” Segrest, a native of Tuskeegee, AL, is a writer, scholar, teacher, and progressive political activist. Segrest is best known for her 1994 autobiographical work Memoir of a Race Traitor. In this book, Segrest narrates her experience working against the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina as a member of the organization North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence (NCARRV), a prominent anti-racism group in the 1980’s.  Her book is considered a key text in anti-racist studies.

Segrest’s book Born to Belonging: Writings on Spirit and Justice was published in 2002. It recounts her experiences in activism around the world. Segrest’s most recent book is Administrations of Lunacy: Racism and the Haunting of American Psychiatry at the Milledgeville Asylum. Published in 2020, this book is a history of the Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia.

The DeKalb County Democratic Club is located at 205 N. Gault Avenue in Ft. Payne. Light refreshments will be served starting at 5:30pm. Ol’ Man Russell Gulley will perform several songs at 6:00pm. This event is co-sponsored by The Progressive Women’s Action Coalition and Concerned Citizens for Change.
