SPORTS NOTES: Pisgah alum Tinker selected first-team All-ACCC

Pisgah alum and former three-time all-state player Kallie Tinker has been honored for her play during the 2024-25 college basketball season.

The Wallace State-Hanceville sophomore guard was selected first-team All-Alabama Community College Conference after a season in which she helped the Lions win their first ACCC Division I conference championship in 14 years and advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Division I National Championship Tournament March 25-April 1 in Casper, Wyoming.

Tinker finished third in the ACCC in scoring with 14.2 points per game and led the conference in both 3-pointers (129) and 3-point percentage (41%) and she also leads the NJCAA in 3-pointers. 

Tinker also totaled 60 rebounds, 21 assists and 28 steals while starting all 32 of Wallace State’s games thus far this season. She also picked up an ACCC Player of the Week honor earlier this season.

Tinker, a 2023 Pisgah graduate, was a five-time state champion during her high school playing career, finishing with 1,908 points, 204 assists and 240 steals.

Scottsboro alum helps Montevallo reach NCAA D-II Tournament — Scottsboro alum and former two-time all-state selection Tyson Sexton will try to help Montevallo win a national championship after helping the Falcons earn a berth in the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2016.

Montevallo (20-10), which finished third in the Gulf South Conference, is the No. 6-seed in the NCAA Division II South Regional and plays third-seeded Florida Southern today at 11 a.m. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Montevallo-Florida Southern winner plays second-seeded UAH or seventh-seeded Tampa in the regional semifinals Sunday at 4 p.m. The Regional championship in Tuesday at 6 p.m. with the regional champion advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight March 25-29 in Evansville, Indiana.

Sexton has started 23 of the 28 games in which he’s played for the Falcons this season. The sophomore guard is averaging 5.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 steals. 

Scottsboro alum leads SIAC in saves — Scottsboro alum and Miles College senior relief pitcher Camden Matthew currently leads the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in saves.

The 2021 Scottsboro High School graduate has five saves in eight relief appearances thus far this season. He is also 1-0 with 14 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings pitched.

Matthews, who plays infield when not pitching, is batting .382 with a 1.091 OPS and three home runs and 13 RBIs.

NACC men’s golfer named Alabama Community College Conference Player of the Week — Northeast Alabama Community College sophomore golfer Brady Morris has been named the Alabama Community College Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Week.

The Central Clay County High School graduate shot a one-under par 71 in the final round of the Glenlakes Invitational to tie for eighth place in the 95-golfer tournament field Tuesday at Glenlakes Country Club in Foley.

Morris finished at 5-over par in the three-round tournament while teammate and Scottsboro alum Ethan Roberts tied for 15th at 8-over par.
