American voters have spoken, and they’re returning Republican Donald Trump to the White House.
Trump, the 45th president, will serve a second term following his victory in Tuesday’s general election. The triumph is a remarkable political comeback for the 78-year-old, who lost to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
As of Wednesday morning, the Associated Press reports Trump has 277 electoral votes to Democratic challenger Kamala Harris’ 224. He needed 270 to win the race.
Trump has also claimed the popular vote with a margin of 71,719,689 votes to Harris’ 66,873,800.
Trump won 64.8 percent of the vote in Alabama, receiving a count of 1,456,985. Harris received 768,974, or 34.2 percent.
The soon-to-be 47th president trounced Harris in Marshall County, receiving 34,350 votes to the current vice president’s 5,535.
Trump joins Grover Cleveland as the only man to serve non-consecutive terms as president. Cleveland served as the 22nd president after the 1884 election and as the 24th president after the 1892 election.
Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth from Guntersville shared a Facebook praising Trump’s victory.
“It is a brighter day in Alabama and across the nation for everyday Americans who love our country,” Ainsworth wrote.
“Families won last night, businesses and the free market won last night, the economy and future economic prosperity won last night, girls wishing to keep boys out of their sports won last night, lower taxes won last night, less regulations won last night, protecting our border won last night, law and order won last night, and Christian values and anti-woke common sense won last night.
“It was a great night for America and the freedoms we embrace. Thank you, Lord.”
Marshall County’s other constitutional officer, Attorney General Steve Marshall, shared a statement on X praising Trump’s win.
“I am thrilled to see our country rediscover tonight what my fellow Alabamians never forgot—our love for the US of A and what made us great to begin with! Alabama will now have a partner, not an antagonist, back in the White House! Let’s go!,” Marshall wrote.
