Rainsville, Ala.-- (Full video on Southern Torch Facebook) The Rainsville City Council held their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, February 22. 

Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt announced that a meeting to discuss the feasibility of Rainsville incorporating a  City School System would be held on March 6, beginning at 2:30p.m ...

A City School System requires a population of over 5,000. Rainsville was ineligible until the 2020 census was completed.  Those results show a population of 5,513. 

Depending on the results of the study, the Rainsville Council will then hold another public meeting to address concerns from the public.  The Council will then be the final vote on whether the City of Rainsville will have a City School System. 

The Council passed Ordinance 02-22-2023 which conveyed property occupied by the old Boozer Bridge back to the original owner, Claude Shankles. 

Kay Guffey, Chairperson for the Tree City Committee, spoke to the Council regarding the upcoming Arbor Day projects.  The Council donated $1,000 to purchase and plant cherry trees in the City of Rainsville.  

In other business, The Council: 

  • Empowered Mayor Lingerfelt to sign the necessary paperwork for Opioid Litigation Settlements(Teva, Walmart, Walgreens, CVS)
  • approved street Lights on Dalton Street and Highway 25.
  • Un-Surplused (2) City Vehicles(2021 Chevrolet Silverado-Silver, 2021 Chevrolet Silverado-Black) and transferred to Sewer and Sanitation Depts
  • Put out for Re-Bid (4) City Vehicles( (2) Chevrolet Tahoes-Gray, (1)2021 Chevrolet Silverado-Red, 2006 Chevrolet Silverado-White)
  • Hired Alisia Christain/Full-Time Dispatcher—Effective 2-10-23 $13.85
  • Hired Johnnie Arnold/Full-Time CDL Driver—Effective 2-15-23 $16.85
  • Hired Austin Mulligan/Full-Time Patrol Officer—Effective 2-15-23 $16.05
  • Hired Khristy Adams/Full-Time Sewer/Sanitation Clerk I—Effective 3-1-23 $12.89
  • Hired Nicholas Burns/Full-Time CDL Driver—Effective 2-20-23 $16.85
  • Accepted Sheila Townsend’s Retirement—Effective 9-1-23
  • Purchased a  PA System/Field of Dreams for $1200.00 for Installation
  • Welcome to Rainsville Signs—2300.00
  • Gave a $500 donation to the Shriners Rodeo which will be held on March 3-4

The next Rainsville Council Meeting will be held on March 6, 2023.
