Two charged after driver attempts to flee, narcotics found

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — According to the Fort Payne Police Department: On Friday, August 4th, Fort Payne Police Lt. Nick Brown observed a white male driving a black Honda passenger car and he knew the subject’s license was revoked. Lt. Brown turned around in an attempt to catch up with the subject, the suspect accelerated and made several turns to avoid the officer.

Patrolman Dalton Veal came to the area in an attempt to locate the driver and found the vehicle in the 600 block of Gault Ave North parked behind a residence. Contact was made with a subject standing in the yard of the residence and he was identified as 56 year old Phillip Dale Prewett of Fort Payne.

Prewett relayed to officers that the driver had ran. Officers had reasonable suspicion after talking to Prewett that there were illegal drugs present. Lt Brown and Officer Veal searched a vehicle with consent from the homeowners and found methamphetamine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, syringes and spice residue inside the vehicle.

Christopher Adam Berry, driver of the Honda, age 40 of Fort Payne, and Prewett were arrested at the scene. Prewett was charged with Distribution of a Controlled Substance, two charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Berry was charged with Distribution of a Controlled Substance, two charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Attempting to Elude and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  After being arrested Berry and Prewett were transferred to the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Detention Center.
