BIRMINGHAM – Fyffe High School senior Parker Godwin sprinted coast-to-coast to score a hanging, left-handed layup at the first-quarter buzzer. At the time, it appeared to merely give Fyffe a one-point lead, but – in retrospect – it gave the Red Devils the spark they needed.

The Red Devils’ lead quickly grew to double digits in the second quarter, ballooned to 16 at halftime and Fyffe earned a 63-47 victory over Cottage Hill Christian in Monday’s Class 3A Boys’ State Semifinals at Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Brody Dalton led Fyffe (26-6) with 25 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals, and Godwin added 20 points. William Goolesby contributed six points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Micah Johnson had nine points, eight rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists.

Fyffe, coached by Neal Thrash, advances to play Montgomery Catholic in the championship game, which is set for Friday at Bill Harris Arena. Montgomery Catholic defeated Winfield in today’s other semifinal. The two teams met in the Class 3A football championship game last December at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Cottage Hill (26-2), coached by John Price, saw its 18-game winning streak end. Josh Bell led the Warriors with 23 points, including 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Trent Thomas added nine points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals.

Fyffe is in the championship round of the first time since 1950, when the Red Devils lost to Union Hill in the Class A title game.
