The Scottsboro wrestling program celebrated “Senior Night” with a convincing victory.
The Wildcats closed the regular season with a 62-15 dual match win over visiting St. John Paul II at Carter Gymnasium Tuesday night.
Scottsboro honored seniors Vinny Jaqubino, Caleb Johnston, Ayden Mashburn, Connell
Moore, Cohen Osborne, John Stewart and Stone Staton prior to hitting the mat and winning 11 of the dual’s 14 weight-class matches.
“This has been a fun group,” Scottsboro head coach Chris Staton said of the Scottsboro seniors.
Several Scottsboro seniors claimed victories in their final Carter Gym appearance.
Stewart (25-0), a three-time state champion and five-time state-placer ran his winning streak in AHSAA competition to 131 by winning his final home match. The UTC signee’s final Carter Gymnasium match lasted just 28 seconds after he won via pin in the 150-pound weigh class match.
Fellow three-time state champion, four-time state-placer Stone Staton (20-0), coach Staton’s oldest son, also won his final home match for Scottsboro. Stone Staton posted a dominant 15-0 technical fall victory in 1:27 of mat time during the 126-pound match.
Jaqubino (11-8) also got a “Senior Night” win with a 17-2 technical fall victory at 175 pounds while fellow seniors Osborne (19-7) and Mashburn (12-9) received forfeit wins at 157 and 285 respectively.
