The Scottsboro Recreation Department added the first We-Go-Swing in the State on Sept. 6. The We-Go-Swing is a swing designed for inclusive play, allowing for more inclusivity at the playground outside of the Rec*Com.

The project of the playground had been discussed for a long time before finally approving the playground pieces with the exception of the inclusive piece during the Dec. 4, 2023 city council meeting. The We-Go-Swing would be approved during the March 25 city council meeting.

“Inclusive equipment was in the design from the very first concept two years ago. The playground industry markets municipal recreation departments across the country with upgraded, new and innovative equipment,” said Donnie Wood, Scottsboro City Parks and Recreation Director. “The We-Go-Swing is the best single piece, inclusive swing in the industry and we are proud to have it here, whether it was the first or the fifth in the state. We are definitely proud to have the first and hopefully it will lead to others across the state. We are grateful to Mayor McCamy and the city council for sharing our vision ensuring that it became a reality.”

The We-Go-Swing allows those who are wheelchair-bound to enjoy the swing, being able to hold handlebars to both move the swing as well as keep in place, with the handle bars being able to rotate upwards to make entering and exiting the swing easy.

It is also designed to be integrated into any playground, allowing for all children to be able to enjoy the swing together in the same place.
