RAINSVILLE, ALA.-- (Full video on Southern Torch Facebook) The Rainsville City Council held its regular meeting on Monday, June 20. 

The Council approved the next phase of renovations to the Rainsville City Hall by Jimmy Traylor Construction, in the amount of $26,000.

Doors will be installed at the end of each hallway for safety measures.  Access for guests will be limited to the lobby to keep employees safer.  According to Councilman Rickey Byrum, employees will be behind glass walls which would be beneficial in case of COVID resurgence. The kitchen and bathroom areas will also receive an update. 

The Rainsville Freedom Fest will be on Saturday, June 25, beginning at 1 p.m. at 100 Rodeo Lane, Rainsville. The event is free with  Confederate Railroad being the headline act.  

The Council approved the change of the next Council meeting to Wednesday, July 6 beginning at 4 p.m. due to the July 4 holiday.

In other business, the Council: 

  • Approved a security light to be installed at  165 Three Grand Estate
  • Hired  Sean Fowler Full-Time Patrolman at the Police Department, effective 6/20/22
  • Promoted Alex Jose to Sergeant—Police Department, effective 6/22/22
  • Moved Anthony Baldwin from dispatch to Police Department to ensure Baldwin’s acceptance to the Police Academy.  Pay will remain the same until August 3.
  • Approved Travel/Training Request (next budget year) for Edmondson, Crum, Wilson  (Handgun Instructor Course)
  • Travel/Training Request for Wilson to attend the  FBI Academy
  • Rebuilding an Engine Motor for the Fire Department in the amount of $6,000.00
  • Ordered 150 Garbage Cans from Wastequip  in the amount of $11,385.00 (cans were offered at a reduced price that will save the City $2,300
  • Culvert on Scott Street in the approximate amount of $4,000 to Boozer Construction, which will include tile and two headwalls
  • Boozer Construction to install three headwalls at Chavies in the amount of  $6,000.00
  • Sidewalk  repair  in the City Park, due to underground power and a tripping hazard, to Boozer Construction in the amount of  $2600.00
  • Gave a $500 donation to Cub Scout Troop #184 for their Cub Carnival that will be held on July 9 at the field used by Cornerstone Christian Academy for football.  This is a fundraiser for the troop and the public is invited
  • Changed mileage reimbursement for employees from .58 per mile to .75 for a 1-year period.  The change will be re-evaluated after a year if gas prices decline. 

The Council will meet on Wednesday, July 6, with a work session beginning at 4 p.m. and a regular meeting at 4:30 p.m.
