Chavies Project to Begin Soon

RAINSVILLE, Ala.-- (Full video on Southern Torch Facebook) The City of Rainsville held its regularly scheduled meeting on March 7.

Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt updated the Council on the Chavies culvert project. The project was scheduled to start this week but due to the availability of materials, the work has tentatively been scheduled to begin on March 14.  

The bids for the road part of the Chavies project will be opened and presented to the Council for approval at the next Rainsville City Council meeting. 

“Everything is moving real good... if we can just get all the bids in we are ready to move forward on this,” stated Lingerfelt. 

Mayor Lingerfelt announced that the Spring Cleanup for the City of Rainsville will begin on May 2 -28. Dumpsters will be available behind the City Shop building, Monday -Friday from 7 am to 6 pm., and on Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm. 

The Council approved the purchase of a tractor from Boykin Tractor Co., Inc in the amount of $33,125 to be paid out of the Sewer Fund. The current tractor owned by the City is a 1991 model. 

The Council also approved an 18’x 66’ expansion off the front of the current Freedom Fest Stage. This will allow equipment to be in the dry. Jimmy Traylor Construction submitted the low bid of $45,750 and work will be completed before the Rainsville Freedom Fest 2022. 

The Council congratulated Cornerstone Christian Academy and the Plainview Basketball Teams for their accomplishments in basketball. Cornerstone and the Plainview Varsity Boys won State Championships. The Plainview Varsity Girls Basketball Team made it to the Final Four of the Alabama High School Athletic Association State Basketball Championships (AHSAA). 

In other business, the Council :

  • Accepted Jeremy Land’s resignation from the Police Dept—Effective 03-02-2022
  • Approved Travel/Training Request Matthew Cooley—Fire Department
  • Approved Travel/Training Request Jake McClung, Thomas Blizzard, Joey Walden—Fire Department
  • Approved Travel/Training for Josh Wilson-Police Department
  • Authorized a Light Bar Repair/Engine 1 for the Rainsville Fire Department  in the amount of $2300.00
  • Authorized $2,500 to the Agri-Business Center for work in the lobby of the facility. 
  • Discontinued Filtered Water Service at the City Hall
  • Authorized the moving of a street light off the private property located on 939 Everett Road to be placed on the City’s Right of Way. 

The next regular Council Meeting will be held on March 21. The Work Session will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the Regular Session beginning at 4:30 p.m.
