Career Tech Education (CTE) programs are ever changing to meet the country’s education and skill needs. These programs are creating an educational environment that combines core academics with real-world application. CTE currently touches the lives of 14 million students in 1,300 public high schools and 1,700 two-year colleges nationwide. At its core, the mission is to prepare students for success in college and careers by helping them develop the skills, technical knowledge, academic rigor, and real-world experience for high-skill, high-demand, and highly successful careers.
Career Tech Education has been the focal point for a number of economic developers and political figures, including State Board of Education Representative Mary Scott Hunter.
We need to have a mindset change about college. College is wonderful — it’s a destination for many of our grads, but college is not the only way to be successful. Career technical education is important.
We have done a good job in the last four years really pushing career technical education, but we need to continue to push that because success tends to (breed) success.
There are a lot of jobs that that line between blue and collar is becoming thin. We have students graduating out of skilled metal working programs and going directly into the job market in excess of $50,000 a year...these are good jobs.
It’s not blue collar. I’ll teach you a new term – it’s the gold collar.
