BOE Passes Annual Budget

DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — (Full Video Below) The DeKalb County Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, September 10. 

During the work session, Chief School Financial Officer Anthony Cooper presented the 2020-21 DeKalb County Schools budget. Following the presentation, the board approved the budget during the meeting. 

At the meeting, DeKalb County Superintendent Dr. Jason Barnett spoke on the passing of Ider principal Cyrus Frost. 

Frost suddenly passed away last Tuesday. He previously worked in the Calhoun County school system where he was added to the Calhoun County Teacher Hall of Fame in 2006 and awarded Assistant Principal of the Year in 2015.

“When he came to us from Calhoun County, he was known as a great educator, a great teacher, and a great leader. He certainly lived up to that in DeKalb County,” said Barnett. “My heart, my prayers, and my sympathies go out to [his family]. There’s a piece of them that’s lost...but he’ll live on their life and their heart forevermore.” 

At the request of the superintendent, the Board approved the 2020-21 Federal Advisory Council and the Employee-Quarantine/Remote Work procedures.

The Board approved the following retirements/resignations/terminations:

  • Misty Brooks, itinerant special education teacher at Geraldine HS (retirement, 9/1/20)
  • Stanley McClendon, bus driver at Geraldine HS (retirement, 11/1/20)
  • Amy Banks, itinerant special education paraprofessional at Geraldine HS (resignation, 9/30/20)
  • Lila Brothers, CNP worker at Crossville MS (resignation, 10/31/20)

The Board approved the following leaves of absence: 

  • Holly Darnell, elementary teacher at Crossville ES (10/7/20-12/18/20)
  • Michelle Collins, CNP worker at Crossville MS (8/19/20-10/31/20)

The Board approved the following transfers: 

  • Tiffany Harris, bus driver at Crossville ES to bus driver at Crossville MS/HS

The Board approved the following certified placements: 

  • Avery Gipson, secondary english language arts teacher at Fyffe HS (leave from 9/8/20-12/18/20)
  • Marilyn Brown, high school counselor at Geraldine HS

The next meeting of the DeKalb County Board of Education will be held on Thursday, October 22 at 5 p.m. in the meeting room of the Facilities Building. A work session will be held prior to the meeting at 4:30 p.m.
