Firefighter Recognized as "Unsung Hero"

DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — Garrett Eckert, Asst. Chief of the Blake Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), was honored earlier this month as an "unsung hero" with a special, handcrafted ink pen from Fatman's Pens.

"It was simply an opportunity for our business to spotlight a member of our local responder community," said Steve Dover, crafter and owner of Fatman's Pens. Eckert was chosen at random for the prize. Nominees can include anyone in the first responder community.

"The people that work these jobs often go unnoticed and underappreciated," Dover concluded. "It was an honor to recognize these heroes with our pens."

Jason Foster, a fellow member of the Blake VFD, nominated Eckert for the prize, and in turn, Eckert requested a second pen be made and given to his nominator.
