(Powell) In addition the creation of an engineering technology program, Northeast Alabama Community College, recently placed in the top 10% of community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute, has seen substantial growth in enrollment in recent years. Due to overcrowded math and science facilities, the college began construction on a new $10 million math, science, and engineering facility in December.
“Enrollment has essentially doubled over the past ten years. (The facility) will allow us to expand our engineering technology program that we created last year.
We have some pretty large health care programs as well, which require several foundational science courses. Recently that’s led to some scheduling conflicts in science buildings, so this addition will relieve some of the pressure on space for classrooms and science labs.”
-Dr. Joe Burke, Vice President of NACC
The three-story, 50,000 square foot facility will be equipped with:
- two seventy-seat, tiered lecture rooms
- six classrooms
- five science labs
- four computer labs
- a study area
- and six additional classrooms on the top floor which will allow for future expansion.
The estimated completion date is set for December 30 of this year, after which it will be furnished with technology and furniture.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to transition classes into the building by spring break. If we aren’t able to by then, we’ll definitely be able to by this summer.”
-Dr. Joe Burke, Vice President of NACC
