Story by Baylee Sumner
On Feb. 21, Scottsboro High School FBLA sponsors, Elizabeth Clark and Malinda Sommers, took 12 students to the University of Alabama in Huntsville for a business exposition. Around 10 schools across Alabama brought students interested in learning more about business or finance to the event hosted by the business college.
After a tour of campus, each school split into groups to compete in the Millionaire Mastermind Challenge, a competition centered around finance. The groups selected two companies, one to buy stock in and one to sell stock in, and then created a slideshow presentation in 90 minutes. Once time was up, each group presented their slides to a panel of judges.
One Scottsboro group, including Camille Vickers, Savannah Ryle, Marion Stewart, Madilyn Stewart, Ella Mount and Alyson Cotner, placed second in the competition.
“The Millionaire Mastermind Challenge allowed me to practice skills that I can one day use in a future career in business and allowed me to connect to those with similar interests,” said Kaylee Berry, a senior member of FBLA. “The dean was extremely thorough in his explanation of our goal and the ambassador given to our group, Jillian Northern, was kind, enthusiastic, and helped guide us through our entire day.”
The club expects to attend more events like the UAH Millionaire Mastermind Challenge in the future to encourage students’ interest in business and finance.
