FYFFE, Ala. — At last week’s DeKalb County Board of Education meeting, Heather Powell was hired to replace retiring Fyffe Head Girls Basketball Coach Steve King.
King served as the head girls basketball coach for four years beginning in 2016. He helped lead the Lady Red Devils to four area championships, a Final Four appearance in 2017-2018, and was a State Finalist contender in 2018-2019. He leaves behind a 105-22 record.
Powell is returning to her alma mater where she led the program to three Class 2A State Championships. In her six-year career at Fyffe, she netted 4,149 points and earned the Miss Basketball award in 1995.
“Everyone at Fyffe has been so very welcoming and awesome to my children, my husband, and me, and we love the Fyffe community. The opportunity to come back toward the end of my coaching career while my own children are still in school is a sweet feeling,” Powell said. “My personal family, the Fyffe coaches, and Fyffe community taught me growing up to have such pride in this school, and I am super excited to help instill those same feelings to another generation. It is a true blessing to have this opportunity, and I pray that It will be a great situation for everyone.”
Powell served as an assistant coach for Fyffe during the 2018-2019 season before taking a job as a varsity coach at Guntersville.
