Down But Not out: Red Devils seek redemption in Game 2

By Joseph M. Morgan
FYFFE GAMEsliderdos-01MONTGOMERY, Ala.—In an exciting opening round of the 2016 AHSAA Class 2A State Baseball Championship at Montgomery's Paterson Field Tuesday between Fyffe High School and defending Class 2A state champion Mobile Christian, the Red Devils came up just short, losing the series opener 6-5 to the Leopards in the 7th inning.

But hope remains. Game 2 of the series began at 10 a.m. today and is underway as we speak. The championship is a best of three series, so Fyffe has a shot at redemption today, Wednesday at 10 a.m. where they will face a team that they now know they can battle with— and perhaps even defeat. To win the series and become state champions, the Red Devils need to win the next two games in a row.

The Red Devils may be down, but they are certainly not out and they proved yesterday that they can play with the defending state champs. Fyffe fell behind 4-1 early in the game, but bounced back and remained within striking distance all seven innings.

The Red Devils scrapped their way through the game, eventually tying Mobile Christian 5-5 in the top of the 7th inning when Fyffe's Jase Jones came to the plate with the Devils down by two runs and with two outs on the books. Jones stepped up with ice water in his veins and apparently heroics on his heart.

With the entire season on the line, Jones hit a clutch double that drove in two runs and tied the game 5-all in the top of the seventh. The Red Devils would hold through the bottom of the 7th, but with two outs and the bases loaded and Mobile Christian up to bat, the Leopards also proved that they could perform under pressure. With two outs, Trent Avery drove a single down the left side of the field that scored Luke Jones and ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a final score of Mobile Christian 6, Fyffe 5.

Fyffe was led by Jase Jones who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Tyler Asley went 2-for-3 with two runs and Cyle Collins was 2-for-4 with a run as well.

Mobile Christian and Fyffe will play in Game 2 of the Class 2A championship series at Riverwalk Stadium on Wednesday at 10 a.m., weather permitting. Game 3 will follow, if needed.
