HENAGAR, Ala. — The Mountaineers 9-10 Dixie Youth All-Star team finished runner up in the Dixie Youth District 8 Tournament last weekend in Hokes Bluff and will be headed to the sub-state tournament in Priceville on July 7 thru 9.
The Mountaineers All-Star team is made up of regular season players from Sylvania, Ider, Valley Head, and Henagar. The Mountaineers will be hosting a fundraiser for the tournament—selling lemonade and cookies—this Monday, July 4 at the Sand Mountain Potato Festival at Henagar City Park.
The Mountaineer's record in the district tourney was 4-2. They lost the first game of the series and fought out of the losers bracket to make it the championship game. The Mountaineers fell in the District 8 Championship to Piedmont 17-4, but through perseverance guaranteed themselves a bid to the sub-state tournament as district runner-ups.
The Independence Day festival begins at 10 a.m. and will end with a fireworks display at dark after a full day of food, games, crafts, and live entertainment.
Southern Torch would like to wish the Mountaineers the best of luck in the tournament. We also want to encourage our readers to get out and support the Henagar community at the Sand Mountain Potato Festival on July 4 and be sure to stop by and see the Mountaineers All-Star team for cookies and lemonade.
