The Geraldine boys and girls varsity basketball teams had an up-and-down week, as the boys advanced in the Sand Mountain Tournament with a win over the Fyffe Red Devils, but the girls suffered a loss to the Sylvania Rams.
The Geraldine boys achieved a fourth-quarter comeback to steal a win from Fyffe. The Bulldogs and Red Devils entered the second quarter with a tied 18-18 ballgame, but the Red Devils started to create separation with a six-point lead to enter the final quarter.
The Bulldogs pulled off the comeback with a 21-point fourth quarter performance. The Bulldogs’ defense held Fyffe to nine fourth-quarter points. Geraldine would win 67-61.
The Bulldogs were led by Lucas Bryant, who produced a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Easton Davis finished with 16 points and two rebounds. Redick Smith had an all-around game with 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Cooper Johnson finished with eight points, five assists and five rebounds.
The Red Devils were led by Isaac Slaton, who scored 20 points. Cooper Cox produced 17 points.
Geraldine boys head coach Jeremy Smith was proud of the team’s fourth-quarter comeback.
“I was proud of the effort we displayed coming from behind in the fourth quarter. We kept fighting and found a way to pull it out in the end,” Smith said.
The Bulldogs met Plainview in the semifinals on Thursday night. The contest was a rematch of the 2023 tournament finals.
The Geraldine girls fell short in a rematch against Sylvania in the second round of the Sand Mountain Tournament on Monday. The Bulldogs lost to the Rams 61-53. The Bulldogs won their first matchup against Sylvania in a regular season battle on December 13, where the Bulldogs came away with a 53-46 win.
The Bulldogs won their first-round Sand Mountain Tournament matchup against Crossville in a 57-15 whipping on December 14.
The Bulldogs were led by Kentlei Rogers, who finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals. Sadie Cox produced a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Kaley Brock had eight points with six rebounds and one assist. Karissa Brock had an all-around game with six points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Jaleece Edwards finished with three points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals. Caroline Colvin had two points and Mahayla Pendergrass had one point and a steal.
