Friday Night Nuggets

Friday Night Nuggets

Well, at least more than one DeKalb County team survived the first round this year. A lot of beatdowns took place last week as no playoff game was even close.

The survivors are...

Plainview Bears (9-2) at Colbert County (7-4)

Independence Day on July 4th, Christmas on December 25, and Plainview traveling to Colbert County in the playoffs...pretty standard stuff.

The Bears history in "the Jungle" is not one to be proud of. Plainview took down a decent Weaver team in the first round, 34-6, so hopefully the Fyffe game is behind them. What may not be behind Big Blue is the injury plague that has recently hit. Jayse Pruitt with a hip injury, Cody Willingham with an ankle injury, Payne Anderson with a foot injury, and John David "Beavis" Martin with a rib injury means that the skill positions that have been outstanding for the Bears all season are now the concern. All four are going to go tonight, but none of the four are 100% so Will Kirk, Chase Willingham and the offensive line are going to have to play lights out to reverse Chief Wahoo's curse.

The Indians are seemingly one dimensional this year, with the sweep being the base of their entire offense...but it's a pretty good sweep. The fighting braves of the Cuyahoga are averaging 39 points per game and even though they've been beaten four times, they've been beaten by three state title contenders:

  • Madison Academy #1
  • Lauderdale County #7
  • Deshler #4 in 4A

This one will be all about taking care of the football and controlling the line of scrimmage.

Plainview +7

Fyffe Red Devils (11-0) vs Reel Town (10-1)

Talk about a tough draw for the #1 ranked team in the state (2A). Reeltown comes to Fyffe with a 16 point per game margin of victory and a couple of big bruising backs with size/speed combo the likes of which this Fyffe defense has yet to face in 2014.

One thing stood out to me while watching film...the yards after contact (YAC) by these Reeltown backs make up the bulk of their yardage. The good news for Fyffe is that their defense is textbook when it comes to tackling and I'll gladly lay my money on Newsome & Co. every day of the week.

I give Fyffe the offensive and defensive advantage, not to mention the home field advantage. I think the Reeltown hype is a little more than their actual on-field product.

Fyffe -16
