Friday Night Nuggets

Friday Night Nuggets

Week 1 of the postseason. Last year only one team, the Fyffe Red Devils, survived the first round. Hopefully, that won't be the case in 2014.

Valley Head (5-4) vs South Lamar (4-6)

The Tigers got hammered by Collinsville to close the season, but have been very strong in 1A region play with a 5-1 record. The gameplan, as always, will be to feed the "Stump".

South Lamar is averaging 24 points per game and is +6 on Margin of Victory even with a losing record.

Coach Higdon and Senior QB Ben Kirby have been here before, which makes me feel pretty good about the Tigers chances.

Valley Head -1

Sylvania (4-6) at Glencoe (10-0)

This one doesn't look good for the Rams. Coach Haynes takes his team on the road to face the #3 ranked team in the state who took down Plainview in Week 1.

The Yellow Jackets trailed Cleburne County 10-0 last week, but ripped off 19 straight points to finish their season undefeated. They're averaging a +28 Margin of Victory with a schedule that not only included Plainview and Cleburne County, but Piedmont and Walter Wellborn as well. This one gets ugly.

Sylvania +44

Ider Hornets (7-3) at Tanner Rattlers (8-2)

Great season, Hornets! You proved the doubters wrong.

I know Ider isn't scared of anyone, but this one is a problem. The defending State Champions, who eliminated Fyffe in the semis last year, are averaging 47 points per game. They'll keep pace here.

Ider +49

Geraldine Bulldogs (8-2) vs Walter Wellborn (6-3)

Wellborn's losses are to Piedmont, Glencoe, and Saks. In their 6 wins they've averaged 55 ppg...that's bad news for the home team.

Wellborn and Fyffe did battle for a few years and now they've moved up to 3A. I think they have a bitter taste in their mouths about DeKalb County and will probably look to take it out on the grinder Bulldogs.

I love Maddox & Co...but I don't see it in this one.

Geraldine +21

Plainview Bears (8-2) vs Weaver Bearcats (4-6)

Tough way to end the season, destroyed by your most hated rivals at home. Forget about it, they're just better than Weaver...even with all the injuries.

Weaver's wins have come against the soft side of the schedule and have been destroyed by the quality opponents. Plainview is a quality opponent.

Plainview -35

Fyffe Red Devils (10-0) vs Tarrant Wildcats (4-6)

Birmingham is a long drive to take a shellacking...but that's about to happen. Tarrant is that team that struggled to win 4 games and were happy to finish 4th in their region and just make the playoffs. Joy! Now they get the #1 ranked team in the state looking to cause doom and gloom to the rest of 2A for the next 5 weeks. Painful to watch this one.

Fyffe -50
