Fort Payne Falls to Oxford

OXFORD, AL - The Oxford Yellow Jackets defeated the Fort Payne Wildcats 41-13 on Friday night. 

With 8:01 remaining in the first quarter, Oxford recovered a fumble and scored, giving the Yellow Jackets the 7-0 lead.  Oxford scored again on a long touchdown run with 3:53 left in the first, to make the score 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. 

The Oxford Yellow Jackets scored 2 more touchdowns in the second quarter to give them the 28-0 advantage over the Fort Payne Wildcats at the half. 

Oxford hit a long pass to score, with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter, making the score 34-0. 

Oxford ran up the middle for another touchdown with 11:50 remaining, taking the 41-0 advantage. Jake Barnes connected with Sawyer Burt on a 4-yard Fort Payne touchdown pass, making the score 41-7, with 8:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. With 1:39 left in the game, Dax Varnadore connected with Brenon Oliver for a touchdown for Fort Payne, making the final score Oxford 41, Fort Payne 13.  

“Oxford had a great game plan and executed it very well against us,” stated Head Football Coach, Chris Elmore. “We made too many mistakes early in the game to be able to beat a team with their ability. We expect our players to learn from these mistakes and improve as we get ready for the playoffs in two weeks.” 

The Fort Payne Wildcats will host the North Jackson Chiefs on Friday night.
