The DeKalb County Basketball Tournament tips off on Monday night at the Coliseum. For arguments sake I thought I'd try to stir up a "discussion" about our beloved teams. And what better way to compare teams in the South than to relate them to SEC football.
To avoid the wrath of angry mothers everywhere, I didn't single out players...like calling Zack Nelson, and not Peyton Wilbanks, the Johnny Football of DeKalb Basketball.
So without further ado, I give you DeKalb County basketball, SEC Football style.
Geraldine Bulldogs - Alabama Crimson Tide
They're favored to win every time they lace em' up. Both are earning hatred from other fan bases the right way, through success...and Twitter wars.
Fyffe Red Devils - LSU Tigers
Both teams have polarizing head coaches that do one thing: WIN. Also, both teams have rabid fan bases that live and die by their colors. You aren't going to cheer for them if you aren't one of them.
PSA: Don't challenge either to a drinking contest.
Crossville Lions - Georgia Bulldogs
Similar in tradition and stability. After dominating for decades, both programs are trying to right the ship and return to the top. What was once a school known for the sport is now a school that just plays the sport.
Collinsville Panthers - Auburn Tigers
The reigning County/Conference Champs. No one is sure how they're doing it or how to stop them and it seems as if every game is a roller-coaster ride.
Sylvania Rams - Ole Miss Rebels
They've got the athletes and talent to beat anyone, but the consistency needed to run the County/Conference table is still waiting to be seen. Both teams have mascots and players with terrific beards.
Plainview Bears - Tennessee Volunteers
Both were at the pinnacle of the County/Conference when being led by loud men that enjoy their ice cream. It's been a while since either have won anything, but new fiery coaches have breathed life into dormant programs. The fans still believe their team is superior...regardless of how badly your team has beaten them for the last few years.
Valley Head Tigers - Mississippi State Bulldogs
The fan base loves their team and they really want to win. Nobody talks about how badly they hate the Tigers or Bulldogs, because truthfully they don't really feel threatened by either. Due to size/location of the program, it'll take a once in a generation player to reach the top of the mountain.
Ider Hornets - Vanderbilt Commodores
Every so often they'll give you something special, whether it be an Eric Nix or a Jay Cutler. At other times it's probably best to concentrate on their academics.
Tell us what you think about the comparisons!
