POWER RANKINGS

POWER RANKINGS

Who's #1? The question that drives life.

Last year the Fyffe Red Devils were crowned Southern Torch Power Rankings Champions after ripping off 9 in a row to end the season. This year there were a lot of questions heading into the start of the season, what wasn't a question was where Fyffe would open the year in the standings...no matter how clueless Jake Harris seems to be with his predictions.

Every team played on Friday night and now we can have actual conversation about play on the field instead of speculation.

The Southern Torch Week 1 POWER RANKINGS:

8. Valley Head Tigers (0-1)

The Tigers struggled in their opener and shot themselves in the foot with turnovers. This team is a solid group and I look for them to rebound when they jump in to region play this Friday.

Next Week: at Coosa Christian

7. Crossville Lions (0-1)

Year 2 of the Clowdis era began with a heartbreaking loss to Douglas. After the Lions scored to begin overtime, Douglas then marched the field and answered. The difference was Douglas opted to go for 2 instead of kick the extra point and converted to end the game. However, there's no doubt that the Lions have progressed since last season.

Next Week: at Jacksonville

6. Ider Hornets (1-0)

Tinkers boys want to hit someone. Anyone. They opened this year with a good win against Valley Head by capitalizing on turnovers. Hopefully they can put last years lost season in the rear view mirror now.

Next Week: at Gaylesville

5. Sylvania Rams (0-1)

We've seen this movie before. Injuries in Sylvania. The Rams fell just short against Sardis in their opener, but the real story here is the health of Senior Quarterback Dillon Cambron who suffered a knee injury and is now in a brace awaiting results. There's a lot to like about the Rams, but they're going to need their gunslinger to move forward.

Next Week: vs Pisgah #TorchGOTW

4. Geraldine Bulldogs (0-1)

I still really like Coach Arnold and the Bulldogs, but they ran in to an iron fist in Week 1. Maddox, Davis and the boys are too talented to not bounce back. The good thing is that in the grand scheme of things it was a non-region loss and can be forgotten with a win this week. The bad thing is it does factor in to the Southern Torch Power Rankings.

Next Week: vs New Hope

3. Collinsville Panthers (1-0)

Coach Willingham said they were going to be explosive. I'd say he was accurate... Jalyn Martin with a mind blowing 190 yards in the first quarter "set the tone" and the Panthers easily dispatched of Cedar Bluff. Now what happens when they get in to 2A region play?

Next Week: vs West End

2. Plainview Bears (0-1)

If you watch the game film you'll see that 4 plays separated the Bears from victory. Pruitt & Co led 14-0 just before half when Glencoe cut the lead to 7, then went on to score another 21 unanswered. The Bears are adjusting to the new offense well and will have their offensive line at full strength to open region play. Hold on to the football, boys.

Next Week: at North Sand Mountain

1. Fyffe Red Devils (1-0)

WOW. From the opening kickoff that Chambers almost took the distance to the 99 yard pick-6 Will Brown ended the game with, this one was never in doubt. This Red Devils team is head and shoulders above their competition and could realistically get to 15 wins this season. The defense is fast, physical and swarming. The offense is fast, physical and deep. Oh yeah, and they can kick. This is Fyffe's county and everyone else is just playing in it.
