MONTGOMERY, Ala. — On Saturday, the Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) elected John Wahl, a state GOP officer and butterfly farmer, as the new state party chairman.

Wahl, who recently served as the ALGOP senior vice chairman, replaces longtime chair Terry Lathan, who opted against seeking a fourth term. Wahl was also a member of Senator Tommy Tuberville's (R-Ala.) transition team. He is from Limestone County.

Wahl was elected as Chairman by acclamation. He was the only person nominated for the role.

"I am excited about the opportunity to serve the people of Alabama as Chairman of the ALGOP," said Wahl. "I look forward to working with other members of the Republican Party, our elected officials, and especially the people of Alabama."

“I believe it’s important for the Republican Party to stand for the conservative values we are based upon and defend the God-given rights of every individual. We are the Party of free speech, equal rights, family values, and fair elections," he continued. "A lot of these values are under attack right now, and I am committed to defending them as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party."

John Skipper of Mobile was elected as the new senior vice chairman to replace Wahl.
