Sentinel holding political forum Aug. 13

On Tuesday, Aug. 13, the Jackson County Sentinel and Southern Torch will host a political forum for Scottsboro’s upcoming municipal election. The forum will be held in Collins School Auditorium, 102 Legion Street, Scottsboro. The political forum will begin at 6 p.m. with Judge Brent Benson serving as mediator.

The candidates on the ballot for the mayoral race include incumbent, Jim McCamy and challenger, John Moses. For the mayoral portion of the forum, each candidate will be asked five questions and will be given three minutes to respond to each question.

The three candidates on the ballot for the City Council Place 1 race include incumbent, Ralph Dawe; challengers, Terry Thomas and Paul White. For the city council portion of the forum, each candidate will be asked three questions and will be given three minutes to respond to each question.

The four candidates on the ballot for the Board of Education Place 1 race include incumbent, Lee Benson; challengers, Patrick Dicus, Lauren Parker and Kristie Shankles. For the school board portion of the forum, each candidate will be asked three questions and will be given three minutes to respond to each question. 

When contacted by the Sentinel, Lauren Parker said she was no longer seeking election to Scottsboro Board of Education Place 1 and is withdrawing from the Aug. 27 election. As of Monday, Aug. 5, Parker had not filed a formal written notice with the City of Scottsboro to withdraw from the race.

The forum will be streamed live by Southern Torch’s Brian Anderson on the Jackson County Sentinel, 98-3 Wild Country and 107-7 The Torch’s Facebook pages.

The Scottsboro election will be held Aug. 27. If a run-off is needed, the run-off will be held Sept. 24. The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming municipal election is Aug. 12.
