CENTRE, Ala. — LLOYD LEGAL, LLC, announces that its attorney, Scott C. Lloyd, has successfully led the public corruption trial of former Anniston City Councilman Benjamin Levan “Ben” Little for two counts of violating the Alabama Ethics Act.
Scott Lloyd, a 23-year veteran prosecutor, led the effort resulting in the conviction of Little.
The charges stemmed from allegations that Little abused his position as a member of the city council to halt efforts to clean up junk vehicles on his property. Evidence in the trial showed that the Anniston Code Enforcement Officer attempted to obtain authorization from the council to declare the junk vehicles a public nuisance and, rather than abstaining from the vote, Little voted “no” on his own matter.
Scott Lloyd prosecuted the case under special assignment from the office of Attorney General Steve Marshall. The case was tried in Birmingham. Scott
Lloyd said, “The jury’s verdict proves two things. One: Nobody is above the law. Two: You don’t sit in judgment on your own case. We are thankful to the jury for their attention and dedication to justice.”
After the trial, Scott Lloyd also acted to protect Councilman Little from vigilante violence. When reading online accounts of the trial, Scott Lloyd discovered comments where one Danny Floyd, a resident of Oxford, made a call for violence against Little. Lloyd immediately warned the Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office. Floyd was charged with Harassing Communications.
Scott Lloyd said, “Ben Little needed to be convicted of the Ethics Charges, but for a case that boiled down to nuisance vehicles, he didn’t deserve to be murdered. Even though I had prosecuted him, he’s a citizen and it was my duty to take reasonable steps to protect him from vigilante violence.”
