Geraldine Discuss Improvements to Youth Fields

GERALDINE, Ala.--The Geraldine Town Council met on Tuesday, March 15.

Coach Jamie Gilbert from Geraldine School prayed the opening prayer and Mayor Ables led the pledge to the flag. Minutes from March 8 and February 14 were approved. 

The council heard from Coach Tray Gilbert and Randi Williams about requests for improvement in facilities at the youth league fields and facilities. Information was shared with the Council about what other communities in the area do for their youth programs. Several coaches, parents, and players were among the 35 people in attendance. 

High School Senior Levi Martin spoke about how much the youth program has meant to him over the years is not only learning skills but developing friendships that will last for many years. Mayor Ables mentioned that because of Levi's many years of training and hard work he has signed to play baseball at Jacksonville State. 

Emily McCamy from DeKalb County Council on Aging made a presentation about the many programs they provide including Senior Centers, Counseling for Medicare recipients, transportation, Masters Games, and much, much more. Ms. McCamy had handouts for the adults and spoke to an audience of 35 about the many benefits of being involved in community activities.

In other business the council:

  • voted to accept the resignation of police officer Dustin Huggins effective March 7.
  • Mayor Ables gave an update on the progress of a Tee Ball Field that is being constructed.
  • The council discussed the Town Egg Hunt to be held on April 9th. 
  • Mayor Ables noted that the new Welcome to Geraldine signs on Highway 75 is scheduled to be in place by sometime in June.
  • The Council agreed to sponsor a Picnic in the Park on June 11th and support a Community-Wide Yard Sale on June 18th. More details will be available soon. 
  • Mayor Ables also mentioned a "Singing in the Geraldine Park" on May 14th at 4:00 PM sponsored by Donna Feazell and local radio station ICRADIO. More information is available at https://icradio.media.
  • The council agreed to continue sponsoring a Farmer's Market this year with details to follow soon.
