Cutter Mays put together a very productive season for the Pisgah football team in his first season as the Eagles’ starting quarterback.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association took notice, naming the sophomore the Class 2A first-team all-state quarterback.
Now Mays is up for more recognition from the ASWA.
Mays has been named a finalist for the ASWA’s 2025 Class 2A Back of the Year. He is one of three finalists for the award along with Coosa Christian running back Kylen Johnson and Luverne quarterback/athlete Kane Smith.
The award will be presented during the ASWA Football Awards Banquet in Montgomery Jan. 20.
Mays completed 172 of 233 pass attempts for 2,565 yards and 35 touchdowns while helping Pisgah go 11-3, win the Class 2A Region 7 championship and reach the 2A state semifinals. Mays also earned spots on the All-Jackson County and Class 2A All-Region 7 teams and was named the 2025 Jackson County Newcomer of the Year.
Pisgah head coach Adam Gilbert said Mays being selected as a Class 2A Back of the Year finalist speaks to the sophomore’s commitment and work ethic.
“He didn’t even come out of spring as the starter, but he made it his mission to win the job and did,” Gilbert said. “Once he won over the team, he made it his mission to give the seniors the best possible chance of being champions. He is a great player and leader, but he is an even better teammate.”
