Southern Torch Flick Picks

Southern Torch Flick Picks

As we enter the final stretch of 2014, (or act three, in the spirit of this article) we face arguably one of the most promising seasonal outpours of films in recent years. It's no secret that the staff of Southern Torch almost depends on movies as a method of communication. Rare is the day that the phrase "It's like that movie, (insert movie title here)" isn't uttered at the office by someone. For the convenience of our readers, we've compiled a list of our most anticipated films of the remainder of 2014. Collectively;

  1. Interstellar
  2. Into the Woods
  3. Dumb and Dumber To
  4. The Gambler
  5. Big Hero 6

Individually;

Zach

1. Interstellar
They had me at "Christopher Nolan" (Inception, The Dark Knight). They had me at "Space exploration Sci-fi epic". They had me at Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Matthew McConaughey. They had me when they started advertising the SEVEN formats of film and digital video it would be shown in. Then Quentin Tarantino had to go and give me a cinematic heart attack by saying "It's been awhile since somebody has come out with such a big vision...". I'll be there opening night.

2. Big Hero 6
I love Marvel movies and I love animated movies. What's the downside, here?

3. Into the Woods
Coming to theaters on Christmas and to NACC Theatre in April. One of my favorite musicals starring most of my favorite people.

4. The Interview
Seth Rogen and James Franco try to kill Kim Jong Un. North Korea has said that the release of this film would be an act of war, and to top it all off, one of the posters says "From the Capitalist Pigs Who Brought You This is the End".

5. Dumb and Dumber To
I'm a little worried by the trailers, but I've been waiting twenty years for this. With all of the money I'm about to spend on the movies I have to see, I might have to sell some stuff to Billy in 4C to get tickets.

Jordan

1. Nightcrawler . I'm a huge Jake Gyllenhaal fan. And any story that's as an intense thriller dealing with media and going out and taking it for yourself has me all in.

2. Fury . If you know me then you know my obsession with World War II and the Greatest Generation. Saving Private Ryan is my favorite movie of all time, and while I can't see this movie being anywhere close to that level, a gritty WW2 movie with Brad Pitt will hopefully make up for the abominations that were "Red Tails" and "The Monuments Men".

3. Top Five . The only comedy on my list. Only the trailer can explain.

4. The Gambler . You can't ever go wrong with Marky Mark and the wise guys.

5. The Imitation Game . Again, WWII is my obsession. Mix in Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong and Kiera Knightley trying to break the Nazi code and I'm there.

2. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1
Why? I've read the books and watched the movies- the story isn't over.

3. Big Hero 6 Why? Disney.

4. Night at the Museum 3
Why? Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt

5. Dumb and Dumber To
Why? Because it's actually happening.

Jake

1. Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1

This series has 100% engulfed me. I knew nothing about it going in, absolutely loved the first one, and the second one was even better. The acting is great, the story line is fantastic... It has all the elements of a great movie.

2. Dumb and Dumber To.
No reason needed, it's simply going to be great.

3. The Gambler
Name one movie that Mark Wahlberg has done that's bad. Go on. I'll be waiting.

4. Into the Woods
I'm a sucker for musicals, but this one isn't my favorite. Nonetheless... Anna Kendrick. #Swoon

5. Interstellar
I've become a big fan of Matthew McConaughey, and also... space.
