RAINSVILLE, Ala.-- (FULL VIDEO ON SOUTHERN TORCH FACEBOOK) Rainsville City held its regular meeting on Thursday, September 9 due to the Labor Day Holiday.
The Council held a public hearing regarding an alcohol license for Mayo’s Hilltop Inc. located at 1916 McCurdy Avenue N in Rainsville. With no objections, the license was approved pending a background check.
India Steele Penrod and Jennifer Lugo of Family Services of North Alabama addressed the Council, regarding their efforts to provide advocacy for victims of sexual abuse. Family services also conduct internet safety classes throughout the school system and have a new program this year called “Coaching Boys to Men.” This program educates local coaches on how to mentor and coach young men. In other business, the Council:
- Adopted Ordinance 09-09-2021-1 to amend the city’s handbook, Part 13, Section 2 pertaining to city vehicles
- The Council approved the purchase of a recording system for the police department from Quality Recording Solutions in the amount of $14,767
- Adopted the Travel and Training Policy Ordinance 09-09-2021-2, with Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt voting no
- Accepted the resignation of Ronald Ward from the Board of Adjustments
- Placed Eric Samples on the Board of Adjustments
- Approved three police department travel requests: Matt Crum and Gerald Mount (Anniston, AL for bloodstain pattern analysis training), Josh Wilson (Jacksonville, AL for fingerprint an evidence collection and photography)
- Promoted Jonathan Haney to Sergeant beginning September 15
- Adopted Resolution 09-09-2021-A to surplus three police department owned guns
- Approve the purchase of a Canon printer/copier from Berry and Dunn in the amount of $499 for the Annex Building
- Approved the purchase of a computer and office equipment for the Annex Building in the amount of $6,708.83
- Adopted Resolution 09-09-2021-B to surplus old computers and equipment from the Annex Building
- Approved the reimbursement of salary (including insurance and retirement) from the DeKalb County Board of Education for the city-provided Fire School Instructor with the DeKalb County Technology Center program
- Approved the emergency repair of a culvert located on Chavies Road, with the cost estimated as $60,000-$70,000
- Approved to place a headwall on Oak Street by Boozer Construction in the amount of $3,000
- Approved the purchase of 100 garbage cans in the amount of $7,521.60
- Approved the repair of an air conditioning in a Rainsville Sanitation Truck in the amount of $1,500
- Approved the repair of a side cutter, that keeps the side of the roads cleaned off, in the amount of $3,000
- Approved the purchase of an auger gearbox for the Wastewater Treatment Plant in the amount of $3,500 for Living Water Services
- Approved emergency repair of a pump station, in the amount of $3,450 by Living Water Services, at the Northeast Alabama Agri-Business Center
- Approved a contract with Bounce & Rides for a Synthetic Ice Rink and pay a deposit in the amount of $1,200
The next meeting of the Rainsville City Council will be held on September 20. The work session will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the regular session at 4:30 p.m.
