SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Scottsboro downs rival North Jackson

The Scottsboro softball team scored all of its runs in its final three innings to grab a win over its archrival.

The Class 5A No. 6-ranked Wildcats defeated North Jackson 8-1 Monday at the Scottsboro High School.

Scottsboro (9-6) got three consecutive singles from Anna Clair Crocker, Austin McNeece and Shila Wadkins before Ava Grace Long singled to drive in Crocker to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Lana Emanuel and Morgan Perkins both reached and scored on North Jackson errors to give Scottsboro a 3-0 lead after five innings

North Jackson pulled within 3-1 in the top of the sixth when Darcy McClendon’s RBI single plated Ally Ferguson, but and the Wildcats added five runs in the sixth in an inning that included RBI singles by Crocker and Perkins.

McNeece finished 3-for-4 while Crocker went 2-for-4 for Scottsboro, which got one hit each from Perkins, Wadkins, Long and Emanuel.

Crocker pitched a complete game to get the win in the circle for the Wildcats, allowing no earned runs while recording two strikeouts.

Allie Benson and Brook Cloud both finished 2-for-3 for the Chiefs while McClendon, Peyton Malley and Addie Reed had one hit each. McClendon pitched a complete game for North Jackson, allowing just one earned run while recording seven strikeouts.

North Jackson 12, NSM 8 — At Scottsboro, the Chiefs rebounded from a loss to Scottsboro earlier in the evening to edge North Sand Mountain in a game played at Scottsboro High School.

North Jackson (4-9), which defeated the Bison on walk-off hits twice in the Jackson County Tournament the previous week, jumped out to a 11-3 lead in the third inning en route to the win. 

Brook Cloud and both finished 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored — Cloud also had two stolen bases — for North Jackson while Peyton Malley was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Darcy McClendon was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Josie McClendon contributed a double and an RBI sacrifice fly for the Chiefs while Allie Benson had an RBI single and Addie Reed walked twice and scored two runs. Benson pitched a complete game to get the win in the circle for North Jackson.

Kaleigh Roberts went 2-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs for NSM (6-8) while Kendall Williamson had two hits and Alexia Kirkpatrick and Ava Henson had one hit each.

Skyline 12-16, Valley Head 0-1 — At Skyline, the No. 5-ranked Vikings swept a Class 1A Area 15 doubleheader on Monday. 

Skyline (7-8, 4-0) won the opener 12-0, getting one hit and three RBIs from Eva Gates, one hit and two RBIs from Sylvia Shelton, one hit from Judah Kelsey and Trinity Skipper, two RBIs and two walks from Hadley Epps and one RBI each from Adalyn Bellomy and Brinlynn Stephens. 

Epps pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing just two hits while recording 11 strikeouts.

The Vikings won Game 1 in four innings 16-1. Veah Buchanan had one hit and two RBIs and Bellomy had two RBIs while Claire Wallingsford had two hits and one RBI, Summer Johnson and Trinity Skipper (RBI) had one hit each and Gates and Maddux Winninger had two walks each. 

Bentlee Romans got the win in the circle with two strikeouts while Brinna Wilson had four strikeouts in two innings in relief.

TUESDAY

Scottsboro 10, Pisgah 1 — At Pisgah, pitcher Jayda Matayo silenced Pisgah’s bats and the visiting Class 5A No. 6-ranked Wildcats scored in every inning except the second en route to the win over 2A No. 4 Pisgah.

Anna Clair Crocker finished 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Scottsboro (10-6) while Shila Wadkins was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Ali Jones was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. 

The Wildcats also got two hits, three runs and two stolen bases from Morgan Perkins, two hits from Austin McNeece, one hit and two RBIs from Lana Emanuel and one hit each from Kylie Horan and Addyson Crumbly.

Matayo got the win in the circle, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks while pitching a complete game.

Madeline Flammia homered and singled for Pisgah (7-5), which also got two hits from Rylan Lawson and one each from Brinley Chisenall, Emma Sisk and Paisley Patalas.

NSM 10, Sylvania 8 — At Higdon, North Sand Mountain scored all of its runs in the third inning as it avenged a season-opening loss to the Rams.

NSM (7-8) trailed 4-0 before its 10-run third inning that included by Madilyn Johnson’s two-run single, Kenzley Swaim’s RBI single, Makayla Busby’s RBI single and Kaleigh Roberts’ two-run double and RBI walks by Kendall Williamson, Adaleigh Bradshaw and Ava Henson. 

Johnson and Busby had two hits each for the Bison while Roberts, Swaim, Henson and Alexia Kirkpatrick had one hit each. Williamson got the win in the circle, recording 12 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
