Rainsville – The City of Rainsville is looked at expanding its sewer system, after action at the council’s Jan. 15 meeting.
Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt advised the council that there is new construction for industries located on Industrial Boulevard.
He told the council the present sewer system would need to be expanded to better serve the industries located in Rainsville.
Lingerfelt said currently there were funds in the American Relief Plan fund that would help pay for the expansion.
The council empowered the mayor to move forward on the bid process for expansion and to sign any necessary paperwork.
The council approved a bid of $11,370 for four new heaters at the Rainsville Fire Department.
The council also approved bids for security upgrades at the Fire department including a key card entrance system in the amount of $5,493 and a camera system in the amount of $2,625.
In personnel actions, the council approved the resignation of Jamie Goolesby from the Rainsville Fire Department.
The council hired Josh Lee as a Firefighter, effective Jan. 17 at $14.85 per hour.
The council approved quotes from two different tree services to cut trees within the city.
A quote of $12,000 from Michael’s Tree Service was accepted to cut trees on Everett Road, beginning at Scott Street and continuing to Chavies Road. Another quote from Eli’s Tree Service for $1,400 was approved to cut trees on Broadway Street and Skaggs Road.
The council accepted Sammy Smith’s Retirement as Parks and Recreation Director, effective Jan. 12 and approved the promotion of Chris Hampton to Park & Rec Director. Eli Renfroe was hired as the Assistant Park & Rec Director effective Jan. 17.
Council member Brandon Freeman
requested a $1,000 sponsorship for the Bull Bash. Freeman told the council that for one day of the rodeo special needs students from across DeKalb County come to the Rainsville Agribusiness Center for a special event. Freeman requested a $1,000 sponsorship to cover both events.
Councilmember Ricky Bryum stated that the sponsorship went over the cap of $500 per event and that he would not vote for it.
Freeman rephrased the motion asking for $500 for the Bull Bash, which the council approved.
When Freeman asked for an additional $500 sponsorship for the Special Needs Day of the Bull Bash, the motion failed to obtain a second.
Councilmember Ricky Bryum requested a $500 sponsorship to the Shiner’s Rodeo, which the council approved.
Councilmember Bryum also requested the purchase of four 8-yard dumpsters at a price of $4,312 and 10 4-yard dumpsters for $7,060, which was approved by the council.
The council voted to accept a quote of $27,000, from George Harper Pressure Washing & Painting, for painting of the wastewater treatment plant.
A public hearing to discuss revising the Rainsville sign ordinance will be held on Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. in the Rainsville Council Chambers. The next regular council meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m.
