MONTGOMERY, Ala. — On Wednesday afternoon, Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a controversial bill that would effectively ban abortions in the State of Alabama.

“To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God,” Ivey said in a press release.

The bill was passed by both houses of the Alabama Legislature with no exceptions for rape or incest. The bill's sponsors state the reasons for no exceptions make it so the bill can directly challenge Roe v. Wade.

As previously reported, the bill would make it a Class A felony for a doctor to perform an abortion and a Class C felony for attempting to perform an abortion, unless the mother’s health is at risk.

ACLU of Alabama and Planned Parenthood have stated they intend to challenge the bill in court.
