FORT PAYNE, Ala. — In their first meeting of 2017, the Fort Payne City Council approved a resolution that merged several city departments together and approved the purchase of a property by the city.

The council first passed resolution 2017-01, Merging the DeKalb Theatre along with the Coal and Iron Building under the Parks and Recreation Department.

They then approached a resolution approving the purchase of the old building on the corner of 5th street and Godfrey Avenue; at the first red light when coming into Fort Payne on Highway 35, from Gerald Smith. The city would be swapping the rescue squad building on Gault Ave South as part of the payment to Smith. From a warehouse to store caskets, to a feed mill, to use in the hosiery industry, the building has had many uses over the years.

"It was built in 1887, it's part of our heritage, and we've got an opportunity to get that building," said Councilman Wade Hill.

"We can work that building into a project that goes in conjunction with the Patriot's Park development," said Hill, "I think this is going to be a positive for Fort Payne. I'm excited to see this building taken care of and brought back to it's hay-day."

According to Councilman Gerald Taylor, the building was originally a hotel; vying for passengers that stopped overnight in Fort Payne while traveling on the railroad.

"It's an old building, but it's a structurally good building. It would look a lot better with that old metal part torn off. It would be a real good addition as some sort of welcome center, and it will add parking in the area," said Councilman Taylor.

"It's a good thing to honor our veterans and add to that veteran's memorial park," added Councilman Brian Bain.

"It's going to make that area a gateway in to Fort Payne," explained Councilwoman Lynn Brewer.

"That is such a well-traveled road that I think the rehabilitation of that is going to change the look of that area, and make it really appealing. It's great that we'll be able to add that in to the tribute to veterans, and help with the historical and educational aspect of that," added Brewer

"Also when we move building monuments, we'll be able to tear down the building they are in now, and provide additional parking for the theatre and downtown. The building they are in, is in pretty bad shape," added Councilman Johnny Eberhart.

"We think it'll be a win-win for everyone involved," said Bain.

The council also approved an activities request for the DeKalb Shrine Club to hold an annual fundraiser at the Rotary Pavilion for the first of April.

Mayor's Report:

The CED Mental Health board has two vacancies, and one vacancy on the planning commission.

The next meeting, on January 17th, will begin at 6:00 pm, with the work session beginning at 5:00 pm. The different meeting time will be to allow members of the public to provide input on the logging ordinance. The council will also be meeting with a representative of retail solutions regarding renewal of a contract with the city.
