DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — (Full LIVE Video on our Facebook) The DeKalb County Commission held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, October 9.
The Commission presented House Majority Leader Nathaniel Ledbetter with the Alabama County Commission Award (ACCA) for a special act that he introduced that passed through the legislature earlier this year.
Road Superintendent Tom Broyles updated the Commission regarding the CDBG grants that were all completed. He also reported that the regular paving projects were completed as well and this was the earliest completion ever for the year.
Broyles also reported that the reclaiming of County Road 712 was in the process of getting chert placed on it today and should be completed by the end of the week.
The District 1 building tank has been set and they are hoping that power will be installed in the next two to three weeks, according to Broyles.
Jonathan Langley of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office brought forth the resignation of Will Kuykendall to be accepted by the Commission.
Langley also gave a U.S. Marshal update regarding housing twenty federal inmates from the Western District of Tennessee at a cost of $47 per day per inmate. To add twenty additional inmates, the extra officers and vans to transport them would be a startup cost of $120,000, but in return, the County would make $340,000.
“Cost-wise, it will be a huge benefit to take on these additional inmates,” said Langley. County Administrator Matt Sharp agreed with Langley.
The Commission approved the housing of the twenty additional inmates, the purchase of two vans, and the hire of two additional officers for transport when needed.
County Administrator Matt Sharp brought forth a Workers’ Compensation resolution. This resolution needs to be passed every three years and it ensures a longevity bonus for staying with the County Commission Workman’s Compensation Insurance. The Commission passed the resolution and it will be in effect until September 2021.
The next meeting of the DeKalb County Commission will be held on Tuesday, October 23 at 10am in the DeKalb County Activities Building.
