FORT PAYNE, Ala. — A release from Fort Payne Police Chief Randy Bynum Stated:
On Monday, July 17th at 9:40 pm Fort Payne Police Officers observed a male subject pull up in a green pick up at the intersection of 11th Street S and Grand Ave S. The subject revved his engine up and spun his tires and accelerated north on Grand Ave. Officers Patrick Jenkins and Josh Jones attempted to catch up with the vehicle due to the subject’s erratic driving. The subject continued driving north on Gault Ave passing through the North Y intersection, and then entering I-59 at the 222 ramp. The officer’s continued behind the vehicle with the truck traveling at 70 miles per hour. The driver and pick up came to an abrupt stop almost causing the officer’s to collide with him. The driver then continued North on I-59 crossing the state line and exited at exit 4.
Ider Police Officers soon joined in with the Fort Payne Police Officer’s and tried to catch up with the truck as it went up Sulphur Springs Gap. The subject ran off the roadway striking a tree, he then backed up and continued up the mountain. An Ider police officer set up spikes to get the subject to stop, spikes were deployed but the subject continued driving on flattened tires. The driver and truck finally came to a stop on county road 141. The driver exited the vehicle but would not comply with officers command to stop. The driver turned around to get back in the truck and that’s when officers were able to remove him and put him on the ground. The driver was identified as Gary Anthony Plemmons, age 27 of Ider.
Plemmons had a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his persons and admitted to officers he had been drinking. He was arrested for DUI, Attempting to Elude, Reckless Endangerment, and issued several citations for driving violations that occurred during officers attempt to get the vehicle stopped. Mr. Plemmons was transported to the hospital by Fort Payne Police Officer’s after sustaining injuries from his wreck. Mr. Plemmons refused medical treatment.
Fort Payne Police Chief Randy Bynum said he would like to thank the Ider Police Department, Valley Head Police Department, Mentone Police Department, Henagar Police Department and Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in apprehending the suspect. He would also like to thank the officer’s at the Fort Payne Police Department for the outstanding job they did during this pursuit.
