DEKALB COUNTY, Ala.-- DeKalb County Schools will have buses running routes at almost every campus this summer. A total of twenty-two routes will be running mainly between 6:30-7:45 AM and 1:00-2:30 PM each day.  Please be cautious and stop when buses stop on undivided highways.

Alabama law forbids drivers from passing a stopped school bus.  Drivers must remain stopped until the bus resumes motion.  The penalties for not stopping for a school bus are as follows:

  • First Offense- $150 to $300 fine
  • Second Offense- $300 to $500 fine, 100 hours of Community Service, drivers license suspension for 30 days
  • Third Offense- $500 to $1000 fine, 200 hours Community Service, 90 days license suspension
  • Fourth Offense- $1,000 to $3,000 fine, Class C Felony charge, one-year license suspension.

If you strike a child, you will be found guilty of a Class I felony, with a fine of $1,250 and a driver's license suspension of two years. “I would like to thank our Student Resource Officers (SRO), Circuit Clerk Todd Greeson and the Circuit Clerk's office, and Judge Whitmire for helping prosecute illegal bus passing violations” stated Dr. Keith Atchley, Bus Supervisor for DeKalb County Schools.
