Strong visits Jackson County, views efforts to combat invasive aquatic vegetation

Staff Reports

Congressman Dale W. Strong visited Lake Guntersville in Jackson County today to observe ongoing efforts to eradicate invasive eel grass. The visit, hosted by My Lake Guntersville, consisted of Strong receiving a boat tour and briefing of the aquatic vegetation’s impact on tourism and the local economy.

Strong has partnered with the Jackson County Commission, City of Scottsboro, and My Lake Guntersville to identify sources of federal funding that can be used to harvest, spray, and remove invasive species from Lake Guntersville.

“Eel grass is a major economic issue for the Guntersville community and Jackson County. I am working to identify ways to combat this invasive species for the homeowners, recreational boaters, and the fishing community. Lake Guntersville is a tremendous asset for our region, and we must do everything we can to protect and preserve it,” said Congressman Strong.

Jackson County Commissioners, Scottsboro’s Mayor, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and My Lake Guntersville/W.E.T Foundation joined Congressman Strong’s boat tour and briefing.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is also working to address this very serious problem, but locals agree it will take an all-hands-on approach to resolve.
