Snead State Horticulture receives $10,000

Story By MARY BAILEY

Snead State Horticulture received a check for $10,000 Monday evening during the Boaz City Council meeting.

“We have partnered with the Snead State Horticulture Program for the last four years, so we are here tonight to present Dr. Tom Warren and the Horticulture Program a check for $10,000,” said Boaz Mayor David Dyar.

Dr. Tom Warren, Snead State Horticulture Instructor was present to accept the check on behalf of his program.

“On behalf of Dr. Whitmore who regrets he couldn’t be here tonight, the faculty and the staff at Snead I just want to say thank you,” Dr. Warren said. “This gives our students an opportunity to have a semester long project of Horticulture. We already have projects started in two greenhouses down there where we are growing. These plants will go on Broad Street, the park and go all throughout the city. Part of their final exam project in May we go out and plant all that. That would not be possible if it was not for the opportunity provided by the city to our students. So, thank you very much.”

Boaz Councilmember Mike Matthews spoke highly of Warren.

“He won’t say this, but he is also over the fishing program at Snead College, and he just told me that they have moved up one spot nationally,” Matthews said.

“We are number two in the community college nationwide and we are number three in all classifications. I’m glad to say we are ranked ahead of the University of Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, I just looked at it today. There are a bunch of D-1 schools that we are ahead of, and we are really proud of that,” Dr. Warren responded.

After the adoption of the work session minutes and council meeting minutes from February 24, Boaz council members went over last month’s community reports.
