Valley Head High School is taking a unique approach to education by participating in Reach and Teach, a nonprofit educational program that facilitates the opportunity for students to plan, promote, and execute a real concert on their school campus.
This unique approach was developed to help students in a real world experience to gain knowledge in budgeting, logistics, and marketing, while also developing essential life skills such as communication, problem solving, and teamwork.
The students have been working through the program over the last few months with the guidance of their teacher, Brittany Gilbert. Gilbert is the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Adviser at Valley Head and was introduced to this program at the FBLA Alabama State Convention.
“The Reach and Teach program, in partnership with the ‘80s rock band The Velcro Pygmies and Alabama FBLA, is an engaging educational initiative designed to inspire and empower high school students,” said Gilbert.
“By working with Alabama FBLA, the Reach and Teach program supports FBLA’s mission of preparing students for success in business and leadership roles, all in a fun, memorable environment. My students have thoroughly enjoyed the program and we are excited about our upcoming concert.”
Gilbert said this program brings high-energy, music-driven experiences into schools, blending entertainment with important lessons in leadership, entrepreneurship, and career readiness. Through live performances and interactive workshops, The Velcro Pygmies share real-world insights on topics such as branding, marketing, teamwork, and self-confidence. Students gain valuable knowledge on how to pursue their passions while developing essential business and life skills.
Before the concert, students will participate in ImaginEx, a uniquely designed career exploration festival aimed to connect students with real-world opportunities in the entertainment, music, and business industries. Throughout the morning, students will engage with industry professionals, explore hands-on experiences, and gain insight into the careers that bring live events to life. ImaginEx is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and future career paths, showing students that the skills they are developing now can open doors to opportunities beyond high school.
"Our goal is to provide students with a hands-on, real-world learning experience that fosters confidence, creativity, and leadership," said Ashlyn Stutts, Programs Manager for Reach and Teach. "The curriculum is not just about teaching marketing and business concepts, we are equipping students with the tools to for real-world settings, moving beyond traditional textbook learning.”
Stutts said she hopes other teachers in DeKalb County will reach out to her to examine how they could use the Reach and Teach Program at their school. For more information contact Ashlyn Stutts at ashlyn@rntrocks.com. Website www.reachandteach.rocks.
