Potential for severe weather this afternoon, into early Wednesday morning

Watch the weather, this afternoon and tonight, DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Posey cautions.

“There is a significant chance for severe storms Tuesday (May 20) and overnight into the early hours of Wednesday morning,” Posey said in a Facebook post Tuesday morning. The potential for supercells could come as early at 4 p.m.

“Supercell storms may begin to develop into the afternoon hours,” the post reads. “A more intense line of storms with embedded supercells will move through the area Tuesdays afternoon. All risks/threats below are possible with both. All of north Alabama is under a 35 risk category (Improved) for severe storms Tuesday afternoon and evening into early Wednesday.”

Threats/risks include 40-60 mph wind gusts (6/6 risk); 60 mph-plus wind gusts (4/6 average); tornadoes (4/6 average); isolated tornado risk (4/6); isolated severe tornado risk (4/6); widespread EF2-plus significant tornado risk (2/6); hail – one-inch-plus (3/6 average); less than one-inch hail risk (4/6); hail risk of 1.75 inches or more (2/6).
