NACC SkillsUSA Members & Advisors Bring Home State Awards

POWELL, Ala. — Several Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) SkillsUSA members and advisors attended the annual Alabama SkillsUSA Leadership & Skills Conference and Career Expo event in Birmingham, AL on April 15th -17th. This three-day event is a state-level competition for high school and college students enrolled in career and technical education programs. Quality career and technical education is the centerpiece of the conference. More than 1800 students, teachers, education leaders, and representatives from industry corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions participated in the event. The conference hosts 80+ contest events that cover leadership development as well as skilled performance and technical sciences.

The NACC Chapter of SkillsUSA received a gold Chapter of Excellence award, an award for highest increase in membership and our very own Regina Gilliland won post-secondary Advisor of the Year. Overall, NACC competitors brought home 17 medals.

Students from our EMS and MAT programs brought home state champion titles in medical terminology, medical math, and first aid/CPR. NACC health professions students scored gold, silver, and bronze in all three categories and picked up silver in health occupations professions portfolio! Jake Barrentine and Brett Vinson were both awarded a $2,000.00 scholarship from the Alabama Community College System.

  • Bronze/3rd Place: Trey Mizell - NACC EMS

Medical Math State Competition

  • Gold/1st Place: Jake Barrentine - NACC EMS
  • Silver/2nd Place: Stephanie Otto - NACC EMS
  • Bronze/3rd Place: Isaac Jones - NACC EMS

First Aid/CPR State Competition

  • Gold/1st Place: Brett Vinson - NACC EMS
  • Silver/2nd Place: Samantha Mathis - NACC EMS
  • Bronze/3rd Place: Mason Scott - NACC EMS

Health Occupations Professional Portfolio State Competition

  • Silver/2nd Place: Mary Lynch - NACC Medical Assisting

Our Salon & Spa Management students, Nadia Powell, Eugenia Gijon, Madelyn Woodall, Luz Chaparro, Daniela Cortina & Machine Tool Technology student, Nicholas Hearn won gold in the Opening & Closing Ceremonies contest and Ms. Tien Le & model Katie McBryar brought home a bronze medal in Esthetics. Ms. Taytum McGill who has served as a State Officer this year, was awarded with a gold medal for Most Outstanding Technical Student.

Mr. Franklin Cinto also earned a silver medal in the Criminal Justice competition.

Our Machine Tool Technology students also did a great job. Logan Tidwell won Gold in CNC Mill, Jameson Dill won Bronze in CNC Mill, and John Headrick won Gold in CNC Lathe.

Ms. Regina Gilliland was selected as Alabama’s Post-secondary Advisor of the Year.

All first place winners will be representing NACC, & the state of Alabama, at the national level in Louisville, Kentucky in June.
