Moore to lead NACC cross country

Combined Reports

Northeast Alabama Community College has named John Moore as the college’s cross country program’s head coach.

Moore, who retired from public education in 2022, was most recently the cross country and track and field head coach at White Plains High School in Calhoun County.

During his tenure, Moore led both the White Plains boys and girls cross country teams to five county championships, seven sectional titles and two Class 4A Alabama state runner-up finishes. White Plains also had four athletes crowned individual state champions with three others finishing as state runners-up, and more than a dozen of his athletes continued their running careers at the collegiate  level on athletic scholarships.

“We are excited about adding Coach Moore to our staff. He brings much to offer our student-athletes and the college, and we welcome him to Northeast,” said NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “

“We are extremely excited to be adding Coach John Moore to our NACC Athletics family,” said NACC Athletic Director Jimmy Kolaitis.

“We were searching for someone who shares the values of our Northeast athletic department, and we absolutely believe Coach Moore fits that role. He will help our young athletes develop as people, students and competitors. We are competing for championships at NACC and we believe he can help us achieve that.”

Moore is the second head coach in NACC cross country program history, taking over following Patrick Laney’s resignation in April. Laney, the program’s inaugural head coach, led the Mustangs for two seasons. NACC the teams to the NJCAA National Championships men’s and women’s races each season under Laney while the NACC men finished second and the women fourth in last fall’s Alabama Community College Conference Championships.

Moore said he “never lost my love for the sport” following his retirement.

“When I learned of the opportunity at Northeast, I felt the Lord might be leading me back to what I’ve always loved — helping young athletes grow and succeed,” Moore said. “I’m honored to be part of the Northeast Alabama community and look forward to many great seasons ahead.”
