Hundreds of students from across the Marshall County School District laced up their shoes and took great pride in competing in the 2025 Marshall County Olympics on Tuesday.
This year the event was held on the grounds of Boaz High School where students and their buddies participated in relays, softball throws, dash races, running and standing jumps and wheelchair races.
The “Parade of Athletes” kicked the event off as students and faculty took one lap around the track showing support for their schools with banners, signs and their mascots.
The opening ceremony included the torch run with Boaz seniors Angel Alturet, Emma Kate Jones and Emmaline Pounds. Presentation of Colors was given by the Jr. ROTC and invocation was given by Boaz Superintendent, Todd Haynie.
After the mascot race where Brindlee Mountain’s Larry the Lion took home the gold, the athletes started their day.
One athlete, 14-year-old Carter from Arab High School who is on the Autism Spectrum, has been coming to the Special Olympics for years and his favorite activity is running according to his dad, Robert Crouch.
“We love this community, we love these events and I’m so glad that we are able to be a part of it,” added Cameron’s mom, Adrea Crouch.
“We have been able to watch him grow and be a part of this every year that it’s been available. Just seeing how the community comes together is just amazing.”
Carter Kelley, senior at Arab High School was Cameron’s buddy for the day.
“I am in our Senior Healthcare Class, and we all do this together,” Kelley said. “I just like giving them the opportunity to do activities that they don’t normally get to do, it gives them the opportunity to have fun. My buddy has been so excited the whole time he has been here.”
Marshall County Schools Superintendent Cindy Wigley said the Special Olympics was a true celebration of ability, determination and joy.
“Boaz City Schools were outstanding hosts. Every detail reflected their commitment and heart,” Dr. Wigley said. “Our students had an incredible time, and the spirit of the Olympics was alive in every smile, cheer and finish line crossed. It was a day our children will never forget.”
Students, coaches and buddies all received a free meal at no charge for lunch.
